Every diver knows the surface interval. It is the time the body needs between two dives — nitrogen off-gassing, tanks changed, logs written. It is, in the language of the tables, a safety requirement.\n\nWe borrowed the name because it describes something else just as precisely. Between the experience and the next experience, there is a pause. In that pause, what happened underwater becomes something you can carry. Without it, a dive is a memory. With it, a dive becomes practice.\n\nThis is the third phase of the Mindful Diving™ practice arc — Before, Below, Between, Beyond. Between is not a break in the training. It is the training. A short reflection on the boat, a question asked out loud, a note in the log that is not about depth or gas but about attention: these are the mechanisms by which a dive changes a diver.\n\nSo this letter carries that name. It arrives in the time between dives, and it asks one question in different ways: what did you notice?
