The Surface Interval

Safety is the first mindfulness practice

3 February 2026 · Safety & Dive Medicine Board

The most common question we receive from instructors is a fair one: does mindfulness belong underwater at all?\n\nOur answer begins with what we never do. Mindful Diving™ never asks a diver to hold their breath, skip-breathe or hypoventilate on scuba. Breathing is slow and continuous, always. We never place a practice in a task-critical phase — not during descent, not during ascent, not during gas management or any moment where attention belongs entirely to the dive plan. And every practice fits inside the diver's existing agency standards, without exception.\n\nThat is not a disclaimer bolted onto the method. It is the method's first premise, reviewed by the Institute's Safety & Dive Medicine Board.\n\nRead the constraints again and something becomes clear: they are not limits on presence. They are a definition of it. A diver who is monitoring gas, buoyancy, buddy and plan with unbroken attention is already doing the thing. Safety is not the boundary around the practice. Safety is the first mindfulness practice, and everything else is built on top of it.
