The Surface Interval

Measured, not assumed

17 February 2026 · Research Council

It would be easy to say that diving makes people calmer. Divers say it constantly, and they are probably right. But "probably right" is not a standard.\n\nThe Mindful Diving™ research programme measures before and after, with validated instruments: wellbeing, perceived stress, state anxiety, sleep quality and nature connectedness, alongside the FP20 Fundamental Peace scale. Data is anonymised, ethics-reviewed, and published once a year — whatever it shows.\n\nWe work with the Chair in Contemplative Sciences at the University of Zaragoza precisely so that the questions are asked by people with no incentive to like the answers. Research suggests that slow diaphragmatic breathing supports parasympathetic activation, that attention can be trained, and that time in blue space is restorative. Suggests is the honest verb, and we intend to keep using it until the evidence earns a stronger one.\n\nThis is what separates a standard from a story. Measured, not assumed.
